Storage Pit

Storage Pit & landfillA storage pit is an underground storage facility of waste materials. Generally, these pits are lined to avoid contamination of the area surrounding the pit, including soil, surface water, ground water and wetlands. “The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is given responsibility from Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability (CERCLA) act to perform long-term cleanup and remediation of the nation’s uncontrolled and environmentally contaminated sites. Potential sites are listed on the National Priorities List (NPL).” These sites are known as Superfund sites. (http://www.lsu.edu/srp/community_resources/louisiana-superfund-sites.pdf)

Solid waste management companies have a large responsibility when it comes to management of landfills. Landfills are more than a dump site for trash; the responsibility of landfill management must include the environmental impact on the surrounding neighborhoods or region. These sites may contain landfill shops, solidification pits, waste water treatment facilities and leachate management systems.” (http://www.cambridgecoinc.com/industry/solid-waste/services/other-solid-waste-facilities/).

When the remediation of a Superfund site has been completed, the EPA Superfund Redevelopment Initiative works to place all Superfund sites back into circulation for a different use. Whether the site is developed into a factory, shopping mall, housing, park, or ecological protection area, it’s important to redevelop these sites when possible. The sites are placed back into economic, social, and ecological use. (https://leanweb.org/tools-resources/louisiana-citizens-guide-environmental-engagement/chapter-5-land/5-1-superfund/)
