EROSION CONTROL AFTER A MAJOR STORM
Erosion occurs when storm surge and large scale flooding occurs during a major storm. As New Orleanians witnessed after the reconstruction had begun in the years following Hurricane Katrina, the land once swollen by flood waters began to subside. It became apparent that the soil at the base of many homes had eroded away, making it necessary to shore up these homes as part of the rebuilding process. Storm surge made it necessary to bolster and rebuild levees all around southeast Louisiana. Harvey victims may not see the same rate of subsidence from the floods because they’re on firmer ground than southeast Louisiana. However, the storm surge along the Texas coastline will erode the beaches. They will experience the need to rebuild the beaches after the waters recede bringing with it the sand and silt that form the beaches. In Houston, in the areas where flood waters have stood for unusually long periods of time, as these homes were built upon reclaimed wetlands, they will experience more erosion and subsidence than their fellow Houstonians. Erosion Control is an extremely important part of recovery.
