Where Are The Bangweulu Wetlands?
The Bangweulu Wetlands are located in Zambia. Bangweulu means ‘where water meets the sky,’ and it is one of Africa’s greatest swamps with 3 main habitats. There is open water to the North West, huge swamps in the middle, and flooded grass plains on the southern and eastern fringes. The system is fed by the Chambeshi, Luapula, Lukulu and Lulimala rivers and consists of floating grasses, papyrus and reeds. The Bangweulu Swamps also feeds into the Congo River.
The rich and diverse ecosystem is home to 400 bird species, 80 fish species, jackals, hyenas, crocodiles, and so many more. Zambia’s Bangweulu Wetlands are recognized by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance as one of the most important wetlands on earth. This vast, shimmering landscape is home to one of Africa’s most unique residents, the African shoebill (Balaeniceps rex). These amazing birds take your imagination into prehistory and draw birders from around the world.
